| La Cittadella di Sarzana fu eretta per il volere di Lorenzo il Magnifico fra il 1487 e il 1492, all’alba della vittoria contro i genovesi nella guerra chiamata di “Serezzana”. Costruita sulle ceneri di una preesistente fortificazione eretta dai pisani nel XIII secolo, chiamata fortezza Firmafede, rappresenta un importante esempio di architettura militare fiorentina della fine del ‘400. Nel 1496 Sarzana passò nuovamente sotto il controllo della Repubblica di Genova; il progetto fiorentino venne tuttavia completato durante il XVI secolo con la costruzione delle mura che, partendo dalla fortezza, andavano a cingere tutta la città.
Nel XIX secolo, con l’annessione della Repubblica al regno Sabaudo e con i radicali mutamenti delle strategie difensive, la fortezza venne utilizzata prima come caserma di polizia e successivamente come carcere fino agli anni Settanta del XX secolo. Tra il 1985 ed il 2003 una serie di restauri ha reso di nuovo fruibile la fortezza, che attualmente rappresenta un polo di riferimento per molteplici attività culturali di richiamo, anche nazionale. Firmafede Fortress was built at the behest of Lorenzo the Magnificent between 1487 and 1492, when he defeated the Genoese army in the war of Serezzana. The fortress was built on the ashes of a pre-existing fortification erected by the Pisans in the 13th century, and it is a salient example of Florentine military architecture in the end of the 15th century. In 1496 Sarzana was again under control of the Republic of Genoa. However, the Florentine project was completed during the 16th century, when the walls were built starting from the fortress and encircling the entire town. In the 19th century, when the Republic was annexed to the Kingdom of Savoy and the defensive strategies were radically changed, the fortress was used firstly as a police barracks and then as a prison until the 1970s. Between 1985 and 2003 a series of restorations were made, in order to make the fortress available again. Nowadays it is important reference point for a wide range of cultural activities, including national ones. |
